Joyce Hinterding is included in 'Specter Electromagnetic', Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona, Spain
15 October 2011 - 4 March 2012
The exhibition is premiering at a major contemporary Arts Centre in Barcelona in October. A co-production between Arts Santa Monica in Barcelona and Lighthouse in Brighton, UK. The show will explore how our understanding of the world and its cosmos has been transformed by radio waves. With the invention of telecommunication technology at the end of the 19th Century, the radio spectrum became a tool for rethinking the world we live in. Radio collapsed geographical distance, crossed borders and cultures, became a powerful catalyst for commerce, and enabled scientists to study the cosmos in entirely new ways. Yet radio waves are invisible and most people are largely ignorant of the way they work and how they have shaped our lived environment. This exhibition aims to address these issues, showing how the spectrum can be interrogated, illustrated, sonified, mapped and traversed. It will show how artists, designers and activists have worked with this intangible ecology, and illuminated some of it's characteristics.
